PROGRAM ITINERARIES and COSTS for both summer programs

Day One

Arrive in Accra. You are met at the airport by program directors, checked in at the hotel, go out to dinner and have an orientation lecture.

Day Two

Over breakfast there is a short lecture on the history and significance of cloth in Ghanaian culture to prepare you for the cloth market at Makola, located in central Accra, the capital of Ghana. Mokola Market is one of the largest outdoor markets in West Africa and a hub of the urban African experience. A tour of the market will include buying cloth, with the help of the program directors and assistants. It will hone your bargaining skills. You will have an opportunity to have local tailors transform the cloth into clothing.

After the Market we will have lunch and then travel to Volta Center for the Arts, arriving in the late afternoon. People will move into their accommodations, get a short tour of the village and beach, and then have dinner.

Days Three through Ten

These eight days feature experiential learning in the areas of traditional culture, dancing, drumming, Ashante printing arts, and language. Included is daily instruction given by community members who are masters of their craft and recognized culture bearers. All instruction is participant based.

There will be a lecture series covering topics related to what you are experiencing and seeing: traditional cultural practices, the history of the region, traditional religion, and the history of art practices. They will be accompanied by related excursions to local markets, medicine shrines, and a host of cultural and social events and sites.

There are planned opportunities to visit the village schools to participate in educational exchanges with the students and teachers.

You will have some free afternoons to explore the village and area towns.

Day Eleven

There will be an early morning departure for Accra. After checking into the hotel and having lunch we will visit the Kwame Nkruma Mausoleum and Museum, and the Accra Arts Market.

Day Twelve

The morning features a tour of the University of Ghana at Legon’s campus and trip to the campus book store. After lunch we depart for Elmina, arriving for a late afternoon hotel check in and then dinner.

Day Thirteen

A very early trip to Kakum National Forest for the canopy walk 150 feet above the forest floor followed by a nature walk through the forest with a guide knowledgeable in local flora and fauna.

Lunch is at Hans Boatel, a restaurant cantilevered out over a crocodile lagoon.

The afternoon is spent at Elmina Castle, a UNESCO National Heritage Site. Built by the Portuguese between 1482 and 1486 it was the first and remains the largest slave fort in Sub Saharan Africa.

Day Fourteen
